Eco Harvester/Algae Skimmer

1 Minute Skimmer Operation Overview
5 Minute Skimmer Detailed Overview
ABOUT THE SKIMMER:
In 2016 the Chetek Lakes Protection Association (CLPA) purchased an Eco-Harvester lake weed harvester and algae skimmer.  The purchase was funded totally through direct support from the community business and lake property owners.  Fund-raising efforts raised over $70,000, including a $30,000 match from an anonymous donor, which covered the initial cost of the skimmer and a dump trailer.  More recently a dedicated tow vehicle was donated and a transfer barge have been added to the operation.

The skimmer pulls growing lake weeds including roots and seed pods and collects floating algae and other organic matter that accumulates in shallow, flow areas of the Lakes.  Since skimming operations began in spring of 2016, over 1,925 cubic yards or roughly 500,000 pounds of organic matter has been removed from the Lakes. In volume, that’s equivalent to about 160 dump truck loads!  The collected material is composted and recycled as fertile planting mulch.

2020 marked the fifth full year of harvesting operations.  Our records are showing a 20-25% year-over-year reduction in the amount of material being removed.  A coincidence?  Or a natural climate cycle?  While more data is needed to substantiate this trend, it is certainly moving in the right direction.  And the data is strongly supported by positive feedback we receive from property owners and visitors.  We believe skimming is making a difference!

Skimming operations are totally supported and funded through memberships, separate donations and volunteering of manpower.  A broad variety of skill levels are needed.  If you would like to learn more about opportunities to learn more about or volunteer for the Skimming effort, contact us at: skimmer@cheteklakespa.org  or send a text message or leave a voicemail message at: (715) 256-7650.
